Video Game Crafts: Bioshock Infinite paper decal Tutorial

Hey guys! So yesterday I was looking up video game crafts and some few things inspired me to do something of my own! So I went out to get some materials for my project and it was very cheap. Most of you should have these materials at your home or locally right now! Let's get started!

 Materials you will need:
  • A4/ A3 Paper ( preferably drawing/ sketchbook paper, reason why will be told later on )
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Black paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Scissors or x-acto knife
  • Craft cutting board
  • Laptop/ Desktop or whatever large/ medium digital screen e.g iPad
  • Sticky Tack
  • (optional) Newspaper
So this craft project is based on the video game " Bioshock Infinite ", created by 2k Games. The image that we will be using for reference in this project will be Elizabeth and Booker falling.

First of all download the image above and open it in your image viewer. Zoom into one character to the size that you want them to be.  You're going to draw one character per A4 page but if you want them to be a bit bigger, use two A3 pages and draw one character per page. If you tend to make a lot of mistakes with drawing, trace the image by placing your paper on the screen and gently trace around the character's body with your pencil. You should have the outline of the character only when you finish. ( tip: you can add some minor details if you forget what part of the body that is, it's stupid but I've had that happen to me with Booker's wrist bandage thinking that it was a sixth finger )

Once you have done those steps, cut them out with scissors or your x-acto knife ( make sure you are using a surface you don't mind getting scratches on, this is why you should use craft cutting boards when doing these types of projects ). I recommend having both of these tools at your side as when it comes to the fingers and little corners ( e.g Elizabeth and Booker's shoe heels ) you'll need to cut these precisely; but of course, you don't necessarily need to do it as crafting should be fun!

Now that you have finished cutting, get your paint and brush(es) ready as you're gonna start painting! ( If you don't have a craft cutting board or if you don't like getting paint on it, use newspaper and lay it on top of the surface/ board ) Paint one layer of black paint on the cut images and leave them to dry.

Once they've dried, paint on another layer then dry again, do at least 2-3 layers of paint depending on what type of paint you are using ( tempera: 3-4, acrylic: 2-3 - other paints: see how thick your paint is, if it's runny use about 2-3,4-5 and if it's thick and doesn't run too fast, paint about 1-2,2-3 layers)If you are using normal printer paper, it's not a really good idea to pile up on paint because it could get too wet and might penetrate the page causing it to make a hole on the paper.

My images after two layers

-Are your Elizabeth and Booker curling up? That's okay. It's normal for them to curl up as the paper is absorbing the paint with the help of heat and air. But what if your Elizabeth and Booker are a bit too curled up to point you can't uncurl them? You're going to have to try and find ways to flatten them down like placing piles of heavy books on them or any heavy flat items to keep them that way. Reason why is, your paper must've been too thin, this is why you should use drawing/ sketchbook paper as they're coarser, thicker, and can hold many layers of paint, like really watery watercolors whereas printer paper can only hold about 1-2 layers depending on what material was used for painting on it.

To uncurl your images, flatten them down with heavy objects like books, and/ or you can just bend down the curly areas gently.

Once you have uncurled your images, use sticky tack or blu tac ( what we call it in Ireland xD ) and stick them on your walls or whatever you want! You can also laminate these if you want. Now that you've done your craft project, take pictures of it and post it online! If you ever decide to make these and result in finishing them, post it on instagram and tag me @humperdoink ! Thanks for your time in reading this and I hope yours come out well! Bye Bye~
